So is anyone else very unhappy with the pitching staff especially the old fart Wells, did you see his performance yesterday unreal
So, I can't believe I am the first one to talk about our world champs
Where were you when they won the world series???
YES!!! I know it sounds horrible, but when you have expectations for him to strike out, it makes it that much better when he pulls off a big hit (like during the ALCS!)
Please don't trade Manny! And please Red Sox fans....don't push him away even further!
There is no way you could get back an equal player or players for Manny. Manny is the best player in baseball right now and even if you don't agree there is no way anyone who had a player of his caliber would trade a guy like that!
Theo has been a God I hope he's not turning into a fraud!
Gonna be difficult to trade him anywho. His salary is insane and until 2008.
I love what he has done, and I understand he needed a day off. . .but with an off day so close, I think his decision not to play when asked was somewhat selfish. The booing will subside.
Well it's after 4pm and Manny is still here. 24 Hours left. But remember last year when NOMAH got traded it wasn't anounced till after the dead line.
From what I hear they were pretty close. I like Huff as a possible bandaid for Trot and then eventually maybe replacing Millar but not at the price for Manny.
However I don't think Manny will be a Red Sox next year. :( Let's just hope they ask the world for him. He's worth it. And if noone bites...keep him, it's better than any trade anyway.
I applaud you guys for sticking with him behind him.
Personally, I've never been a fan of Manny. I've seen him make too many fundamental mistakes in the field. If he could be kept as a DH, he'd be a greater benefit. I saw a comment on ESPN where a viewer emailed in saying "He's almost as bad as TO", and I'd have to agree. The problem with not trading him now, is that it's out there. His frustration, the teams frustration, and the fans reaction. It will cause problems until it's resolved, either by an apology by Manny, or a trade. An apology may not even be enough.
Whatever happens, this will probably be seen as a turning point in the Red Sox season. If they trade him and are able to win it all again, this will be considered some kind of a spark. If they trade him and don't win it all, he'll be the reason they won it last year. If they don't trade him and don't win it all, he'll be seen as having poisoned the locker room and ruining the "team mentality" that was there last year. If they don't trade him and win it all, there will be questions as to wether or not he was really needed.
Manny is the best player in baseball. You at least can't argue that he's not in the top 5. You say is fielding sucks. Well in years past I would have to agree with you but not this year.
Manny has 12 assists (leads all out fielders in MLB) and only 1 error his fielding percentage is .994 which ties his career best (with 80 games plug at one position) And that year he didn't have nearly as many assists. Compared to other OF's around the league who hit for power....Hideki Matsui 0 errors but only 5 assists, Johnny Damon 1 error and 1 assist, Ichiro 8 assists and 1 error, Ken Griffey 5 assists and 3 errors, Gary Sheffield 4 assists and 3 errors, Shawn Green 0 errors but 2 assists, Luis Gonzalez 0 errors with 4 assists. I can go on forever but as you can see Manny is better than he has ever been.
There is no reason to like Manny other than he's a weird guy. He's weird because he chooses to deal with his fame in a non traditional way. With traditional being 1 of two ways. Like Schilling does and like Barry does. Manny is somewhere in between. I don't like that he doesn't run out fly balls but at the same time wouldn't that suck if your $19 Million man hurt himself running as hard as he could while an easy fly ball was hit to a MLB player (the best players in the word) I would rather he got out every once in a while. I think the worse part of that is the kids watching that are taught to run those out. But with the proper instruction that can be corrected.
I'm sorry if I don't understand why you don't like Manny. Maybe if you tell me who would be batter in his place I might understand.
Fair enough. I don't like Manny simply because he takes plays off. He doesn't run everything out, in the field or at bat. Manny could be the best player in baseball, if he gave 100% all the time, but he doesn't. He seems to only play hard when he wants to, and that's just not the type of guy I want on my team.
Also, since he doesn't run everything out, I wonder how many errors he doesn't have because he didn't try to get to the ball. How many singles dropped in front of him because he didn't run after the ball?
He has done well lately. He's learned to play the Monster well, but I wonder how hard it really is... since Matsui has played it quite well for the Yanks in the past, though he doesn't play in Fenway nearly as much.
I still see him taking plays off, when I can catch the odd Sox game, though. I still see him trotting down to first on an infield grounder. Yeah, I know, they're little things and don't matter much, but I think if you're playing this game professionally (or any game for that matter), you should go all out all the time.
Would it suck if he hurt himself running out a fly ball? Yeah. So what? Players get hurt every day. That's part of the game. If Manny's not going to do something simply because he "might" get hurt, he should stay in the clubhouse, since a foul ball might come flying into the dugout.
I realize I'm probably in the minority in my feelings toward Manny, and that's fine. Everyone has their own feelings toward players. I don't feel that any player has the right to take a play off, demand a trade, or decide he's not going to honor his current contract.
You signed the contract... play the game, to the best of your abilities, everyday.
Hideki Matsui 0 errors but only 5 assists
That's because Jeter plays left for him, just like he plays 3rd for A-Rod, and basically every other position that he can get to. We call him bugs bunny.
I see both sides of the coin for Manny. After staring at him in LF for the entire O's/Sox game we went to earlier this year, I can say his presence in the field outside of play is underwhelming. I was really surprised. He takes off his glove and tosses it in the air, dances to himself and generally acts completely bored/disinterested. I know it matters more about what he does when the ball is in play, but this isn't commercial breaks that we're talking about. This is while a batter is coming up to play, stepping out of the box, etc. This may sound very little league of me, but I was always taught to be ready for the ball. He never seemed ready at that game. Standing next to Johnny out in that field, he looks downright lazy.
I agree with Mike on Manny being better as a DH. His strength is in his hitting, much more so than his fielding, even if he's been having a career season out in left. I've always liked Manny though, and I'd hate to see him traded. But I always figured that he would leave not too long after Pedro.
Iââ¬â¢m sorry, but personally I find Mr. Manny quite disgusting. I believe that the Red Sox will survive quite well without him, should he be traded. Iââ¬â¢m sorry, but the mindset of Manny is really kind of sad. The man makes about $20 million a year and he is bitching and complaining about his privacy? He could buy plenty of privacy. For starters, how about he not agree to be on every magazine cover he is asked to do, or maybe not act like a fool in front of every TV camera in the area. Perhaps not saying derogatory things about the fans in your teamââ¬â¢s home city might be a way to avoid publicity.
I feel that the average fan in the stands, the guy who had to pay half his life savings just to attend a baseball game, probably doesnââ¬â¢t want to hear that the overpaid jackass making $20 million a year doesnââ¬â¢t feel like playing. If that guy in the stands were to tell his boss that he didnââ¬â¢t feel like working, then heââ¬â¢d never be able to go to another game again, because he would be too busy standing in the unemployment line. I know that I wouldnââ¬â¢t tolerate one of my employees refusing to work. If youââ¬â¢re paid that much money to play a damn game, get your lazy ass out on the field and play.
I say let Manny go to another team. Free up some money for players who actually WANT to play baseball. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter how good a player he is. If he isnââ¬â¢t giving the team everything he has, then he is a liability. Ship him to the Yankees; let him get an earful of what the New York fans have to say about him. Heââ¬â¢d be begging to come back to Boston in a month.
Screw Manny! For $20 a year Iââ¬â¢d be willing to stand in the outfield and shoot every player who even grazes the ball; and Iââ¬â¢d never complain about a thing. We just donââ¬â¢t need another bitchy millionaire in this town.
AND THAT IS JUST MY OPINION
One arm,
I have to disagree with everything you said. I can find things that people said that I disagree with and some I agree. But not a thing you said makes sense to me. Let's start here.
For starters, how about he not agree to be on every magazine cover he is asked to do, or maybe not act like a fool in front of every TV camera in the area. Perhaps not saying derogatory things about the fans in your teamââ¬â¢s home city might be a way to avoid publicity.
Just about every Red Sox player has been on 100 magazines this past year and without knowing the facts I'd say he has less than Curt S., Johnny D., David O., and maybe even Jason V. But if he has it's because he's the World Series MVP. He almost has too. When does he act like a fool in front of the camera? They say Manny being Manny but it's just like saying "being yourself". I think Manny takes this game less serious than everyone wants. IT'S A GAME! Shouldn't he? He's always having fun. I believe that's why he's so good. Cause he has fun. He can strike out 3 times on his first 3 AB's and still come up and hit a Grand Slam because he doesn't take striking out serious. What has he said that was derogatory about the Red Sox fans? I must have missed that. I have only heard good comments about the Boston fans out of any baseball players mouth.
Do you not deserve a day off? The guy has not been hurt all year. Should he have helped out? Maybe but it sounds like the media made a bigger deal about it than it really was. Overpaid? Yeah but who's the jackass spending half his life savings to watch a game that is free on tv? If I were to tell my boss I want a day off. I'm getting a day off. If I ask for it I have a reason for it. In my case it's just a job. Yes I make my living by it but it's not the most important thing in my life. For him it's just a game. If you won't let one of your employees have a day off that he/she asks for and you refuse it....Then they are better off with another job anyway than working for a modern day Scrooge.
If he isnââ¬â¢t giving the team everything he has, then he is a liability. Ship him to the Yankees; let him get an earful of what the New York fans have to say about him. Heââ¬â¢d be begging to come back to Boston in a month.
A liability? Half of what Manny has is more talent than 2/3 of the entire roster. He gives his all when he has to. Ship him to the Yankees? Yeah that's the answer. Even swap for their bat boy. Why not? What would the Yankees fans have to complain about? He would be an all star on a all star team. Begging to come back to Boston? Maybe but not as a Yankee. Unfortunately he would love being a Yankee and he knows it.
Screw Manny! For $20 a year Iââ¬â¢d be willing to stand in the outfield and shoot every player who even grazes the ball; and Iââ¬â¢d never complain about a thing. We just donââ¬â¢t need another bitchy millionaire in this town.
Shoot huh? Um OK whatever that means. I have to disagree that you wouldn't complain. Everybody has something to bitch about in life no matter how good you have it. I know Trot has bitched about not getting to hit lefties and Johnny has bitched about bull pen decisions. EVERYONE bitches.
Manny some day will be a Yankee. I have no doubt about that. I will hate that day and probably hate Manny for it but till that day we have one of the best right handed hitters in baseball! Now Red Sox nation needs to stop bitching about his 40HR's, 130RBI, .300BA, and .400SP. and enjoy the GAME!
George:
I didnââ¬â¢t know you were such a Manny fan! Are you planning on having his children too? jk
I understand why such a die-hard Manny fan would object to my rant, and I have to admit that my reasons for disliking Manny are somewhat personal.
The guy is a jackass, plain and simple. He makes 20 million a year and complains about not having any privacy after agreeing to do every magazine cover he is asked to. All he has to do is say no. He is very good at saying no to having photos taken, but apparently only if a fan is asking.
Included in this post are some photos from my wifeââ¬â¢s school trip. She works with handicapped children, and her class went to take a tour of Fenway Park in late May. Youââ¬â¢ll see the children in the stands. Youââ¬â¢ll see the children on the field. you'll see the children in the green monster. But you wonââ¬â¢t see the children with Mr. Manny.
Why? Because the 20 million dollar man refused to take 20 seconds out of his busy schedule to take a photo with these handicapped children.
He is a great player, donââ¬â¢t get me wrong; but as a human being, he is a piece of trash. I would rather have one player who has thimble full of talent and a bucket full of heart than a team full of selfish, bitchy millionaires like Manny playing for my home team.
Just out of curiosity Roland, which of the players were asked to take photos with the kids and who, if any, did?
Katevt:
Iââ¬â¢m glad you asked.
My wifeââ¬â¢s group was the second of four tours from the school on that trip. These tours were going through the park at the same time that the players were arriving to prepare for that nightââ¬â¢s game. The first group was lucky enough to get autographs and photos with Aroyo and Nixon. The third group got Photos with Veritek, Bellhorn, and Damon. The last group, which was about 40 minutes behind the others and was made up primarily of wheelchair bound children with severe handicaps, won the prize; Iââ¬â¢m told that Big Papi himself spent nearly a half hour talking to the kids, signing autographs, and taking photos.
The only player to snub the kids was Mr. Manny, and if his privacy means that much to him, I say good riddance to bad rubbish. Anyone who canââ¬â¢t spare twenty seconds to take a photo with a group of autistic children is, in my opinion, a waste of skin, and doesnââ¬â¢t deserve to wear a Sox uniform.
Hmmm...I have to agree with Roland on this one. I don't care how good a player is, if they're personality in situations like the one he described are that bad, then my estimation of them plummets. It's one thing if you ignore screaming adult fans in your face, but something completely different if you ignore disabled children.
I can say that Schill, Damon, and Arroyo all took time to interact with the fans at the sox/o's game I went to in April, which lifted them up in my eyes.
Then again, that's just how I am. I'm a softie, I like the heartwarming stuff. I hate cockiness and arrogance, which is why I can't stand atheletes like TO and Keeshawn.
If that's the case I have to agree. But not one of us knows why he didn't. Maybe he wasn't there or something I could not think of. I'm not saying that's the case I'm just saying that I DON'T KNOW the circumstances. I have been to a tour of Fenway. There are way more tours than 4. But maybe there were just four "school tours" that day. When I was there, there wasn't a single Red Sox player around at all. They have those tours every day and maybe Manny has been to some just not that one for one reason or another.
What I'm saying is, you hate him for his personality when you really don't know him. You know one account. Now if he walked by them and flatly just kept walking then we would know where he was. But it doesn't sound like that happened.
So back to Manny the baseball player. The Manny we do know. He is one of the best all time if not the best right handed batter of all time.
Do you have any pics of the other players with the kids?
The guy is a jackass, plain and simple. He makes 20 million a year and complains about not having any privacy after agreeing to do every magazine cover he is asked to. All he has to do is say no. He is very good at saying no to having photos taken, but apparently only if a fan is asking.
I'm sorry. I thought I made it very clear that when he walked by the second tour group from the school my wife works at Manny refused to take a few seconds to take a photo with the children.
I don't care how great of a ball player he may be, in my opinion the guy is slime.
I wanted nothing more than to find a link to Manny's Charity and shove it in your face. Well....I found one that he is kind of starting but hasn't yet. It sounds like Manny is a money giver. And from what I can find not very much. I'm not saying he doesn't. I'm just saying I haven't found a lot of money that he has donated.
It sounds to me (again, I don't personally know Manny) but it sounds to me that he is not into human contact. I will not defend him on this but only to ask you to think of it in a different light. Since I was very young I went to many Old Folks homes. I can't do it now. It sucks. Watching someone die. I have a problem with close relationships with older people for the same reason. It scares me. Does it scare Manny? Maybe it does. I really don't know. Do you really think he's that cold hearted?
Honestly if I were him, I would do what I can but I know I would get very emotional. That I meant something to someone like that. Hell when my kids tell me how awesome I am I about lose it. Again...we don't know Manny. Yes the evidence is there that he doesn't do what he can for the kids but I don't know him.
Oh by the way Manny hit another HR tonight. A 3 run homer.
My husband and I also joke about Bellhorn striking out. We just appreciate him for the good he does do the team...We never expect anything good from him offensively...However when he does get a hit or even a home run we appreciate him that much more!!!
Well another Reason to hate Him...HE'S A YANKEE! But he'll probably help the Red Sox better now. Strike out all you want Mark!

SEATTLE -- Mark Bellhorn was one of the unlikely heroes for the Red Sox last October, helping defeat the Yankees and end the 86-year "Curse of the Bambino."
Tuesday, he'll be a member of the Yankees, doing his best to end Boston's one-year reign as champions of baseball.
Bellhorn will sign with the Yankees on Tuesday, giving New York another veteran infielder for the stretch run.
When reached on his cell phone on Monday evening, Bellhorn confirmed the move to MLB.com. A Yankees official also confirmed the move on the condition of anonymity.
Several published reports had indicated that Bellhorn would sign with the Oakland A's, but he decided in the end to remain in the American League East, as he knows some players and coaches on the Yankees.
"The Yankees seemed interested," said Bellhorn, speaking from the airport in Phoenix, on his way to Seattle, where he will sign a contract on Tuesday. "The Yankees are one of the most well-known franchises in all of sports. Not everybody gets to play for them."
Bellhorn will likely fill the role of a utility infielder, which will probably result in Felix Escalona heading back to the Minors until rosters expand on Thursday.
"I'll do whatever they need me to do," Bellhorn said. "I can play a lot of positions, I can pinch-run, pinch-hit -- whatever they need from me."
Bellhorn spoke recently with Yankees reliever Alan Embree, who signed with the Yankees on July 30 after being released by the Red Sox.
"He just asked me a few questions about how I liked it here," Embree said. "He didn't know what was going to materialize from it, but I told him I enjoy it. I put in my two cents."
Embree believes that Bellhorn will help the Yankees with his glove and his experience.
"He's a great defensive player who will fit well in this clubhouse," Embree said. "He doesn't say much, but he plays great defense and he's been through the battles."
Bellhorn was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Aug. 19, giving Boston 10 days to either trade or release the 31-year-old.
Last week, Bellhorn cleared waivers, declining Boston's invitation to report to Triple-A Pawtucket. He was then placed on release waivers, making him eligible to sign elsewhere as a free agent on Tuesday.
Bellhorn will become the second player let go by the Red Sox to join the Yankees this season, reuniting with Embree. As for bolting one side of the rivalry for the other, Bellhorn believes it will be a unique perspective.
"I don't think it's the players as much as the fans that create the rivalry," he said. "It will be interesting to see it from the other side."
Bellhorn was one of the sparks for the Red Sox during their title run last fall, hitting a big three-run home run against the Yankees' Jon Lieber in the ALCS. He also belted a game-winning homer in Game 1 of the World Series against the Cardinals' Julian Tavarez.
Boston signed him for $2.75 million to play second base, but he struggled at the plate during the first half, hitting .221 with six home runs and 27 RBIs before the All-Star break.
On July 17, Bellhorn injured his left thumb while diving for a ball hit by Jason Giambi, landing him on the disabled list. Three days later, the Red Sox acquired Tony Graffanino, who has been starting at second base for Boston ever since. With Alex Cora filling the role of a serviceable backup, the Red Sox decided they didn't need Bellhorn on the roster anymore.
He was sent on a Minor League rehab assignment on Aug. 1, where he remained until he was designated for assignment less than three weeks later.
Despite his offensive struggles this season, Bellhorn still possesses a solid glove at second, and can also play third base and shortstop. Bellhorn has even played games at first base and all three outfield positions in the past two seasons.
Are we upset by this?
I mean he is the strike out king!
Whatever... maybe he is a mole for us LOL
Yankees suck!
OH NO, I am only saying that now we have a reason to hate him. Because he's a Yankee. But like I said "But he'll probably help the Red Sox better now. Strike out all you want Mark!"
I hope if we see the Yankees in the playoffs that Mark gets all their 2b starts. Almost automatic out.
Re: RED SOX
When they won the world series we were at home in Maryland screaming and crying and calling our families...
More interestingly during the ALCS we were on our honeymoon in Bah Habah Maine and watched most of the games at local bars. Although we listened to Game 4 on a looooonnng drive from Nova Scotia back to Bar Harbor after a boat ride from hell. It was our only comfort in the back woods of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Northern Maine in a very small rental car. Thank God for AM radio!
Re: RED SOX
LOL
You are a true red sox fan!!
Re: RED SOX
Well at least they are starting off slow. That's better than ending slow. I never liked picking up Wells. I think he's a double agent. Not kidding. He is and will always be a Yankee. Even if he was the one who did what Schilling did last year I still would hate him.
I was at a friends house when they won the World Series. I was high in demand around here. All my friends wanted to see me cry. ( I didn't) Seriously though. I was getting invites all over the place. I ended up making the most important Invitee upset though. My wife wanted to share in my glory but I left her home with the kids. She's not a big fan anyway. She would have watched the bottom of the 9th and I would have watched the other 8 1/2 innings trying to get my kids to sit down and watch it with me.
I am content with still being ahead of the Spankees in the standings. "wait till next month"! :D
Re: RED SOX
Whenever I see Wells I think of the ending psych-out from the movie Baseketball when Trey Parker goes into Cartman voice and says "Hey Guys...I'm f*&!ing fat! Seriously!"....makes me laugh every time...
I just wish Schill would get better...that Jesus would heal his ankle or something (JK). My fantasy baseball team is suffering without him...
Re: RED SOX
I agree slow start. But the whole pitching staff? No no no. . .
Wake is pretty consistent, Clement pitched a full game today, Wells just came off the DL, and Schill is still out.
We have a damn good record for losing two big guns that early.
My $.02
Re: RED SOX
How's about the 17-1 shelling of the Yanks yesterday!!!
It was on every TV in our house. We don't often get to see the Red Sox on TV here in MD, so we took full advantage and thoroughly enjoyed watching the proverbial spanking.
Re: RED SOX
No kidding. It's nice to have them on evry day this weekend. I also see ESPN picked up a couple more games in the next two weeks or so. It helps to have a GREAT team. I also get to see more Pats game sthan I used too!
( About the 17 - 1 Win.) At first I thought hold on boys save some for the next couple of days but hell...embarass the crap out of them!
Let's win that rubber match tonight! :D
Re: RED SOX
all i know is that the YANKEES SUCK
WOO HOO
GO SOX
Re: RED SOX
Yes, yes they do. Do you know when my sister goes out to Cardinals/Patriots games in Arizona that Yankees Suck chants break out? 2000 miles away in a completely different sport and they still do it! Ask my four year old nephew (who's spent most of his life in Arizona) what he thinks of the yankees and he'll tell you "YANKEES SUCK". I love it.
Re: RED SOX
5 DAYS IN A ROW ON NATIONAL TV!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!
Yankees do suck though and now we have proof!
Re: RED SOX
Have they been on cable? I so wish I had cable!! Gotta love living in the middle of nowhere.

Re: RED SOX
Keith Foulke Sux!
Did anyone hear his comments? here they are.
``They can boo, they can cuss. . . . If they don't want me to do the job, tell them to go tell management. I've done a lot of good for this team. They pay their money. Let them boo. Does it look like it bothers me?''
``(The fans) aren't going to make it any harder for me to look in the mirror,'' Foulke said, ``or more embarrassing for me to walk into this clubhouse and look into the faces of my teammates, then I am to walk out and see Johnny from Burger King booing me."
I don't work at Burger King but I still take offense. I don't care what he did for the Sox last year.
Let Timlin save.
Re: RED SOX
AMEN
TIMLIN NEEDS TO REPLACE THAT ARSE PUPPET
I hate foulke.
He's a tool.
Re: RED SOX
"Fans" like George and JV are the reason Grady Little wasn't brought back as the manager, Clemens isn't in a Sox uniform, and why just about everyone hates Red Sox fans. Who will you turn on next? Manny when he costs the Sox a game with his inability to field? Damon because he won't cut his hair? Francona because he sticks with Foulke?
Re: RED SOX
I don't really care one way or another about Foulke as a player/person. But I don't envy his position as a Boston player. I'm not sure there is a tougher city out there to play for. Our fans are fiercely loyal but also brutal, and I can't blame him for lashing out. If you had a chorus of about 500,000 people criticizing your every move at work, you'd probably lash out every once in a while too. Of course, if that's all he does (and I'm not sure because I haven't been following his press ramblings) then I could safely say he was an ass.
Just my 2 cents.
I miss Schill.
Re: RED SOX
First of all, I take great offense to your use of quotes around the word fans. I am a born and bred red sox fan and will follow them to the grave. I could care less if they are in 1st or 5th place. I will still love them no matter what.
THAT is why I want to see the best for them. Foulke has been suffering. Time to give him a break and replace him with someone who can get the job done. It's buisness.
Perhaps you should find something you truly care for. Maybe then you will understand our position. Until then, you will be just another outsider making your little insignificant comments from the peanut gallery.
Re: RED SOX
Exactly. If you play for boston, you had better be thick skinned. However, you had better be careful if you insult the people who pay your salary. Without fans in the seats, there is no money in the organization. Without money in the organization, you get no salary.
The fans are the boss. How would your boss react if you belittled him and his family?
And as far as making fun of "Johnny from Burger King" that was just uncool and showed how arrogant the man can be. That is why
That's my opinion. There is never a reason to insult the fans. You get booed because you are in professional sports, comes with the territory. If you cant take the heat, get the &^%# off the field.
Re: RED SOX
Couldn't have said it better myself, JV. I am not a fan who gives up on someone easily. But when do you give up? Although the Red Sox are in 1st place if you have a guy who keeps giving up leads when he is the guy who is supposed to be your best out of the bull pen then you need to decide when enough is enough.
I am one fan (in the minority) who believed that Grady little got shafted. But obviously there was something more to it because he is now 2 (hiring) years removed and still without a managers job. I'm not saying there is but maybe there was more to it than just the whole Pedro thing.
And for the record....I never gave up on Clemens. Until he became a Yankee. Now I could care less about the guy.
And finally people hating "Red Sox Fan" I really don't know who hates "Red Sox Fan" but I would imagine those who do is only because the way things played out last year and how the media beat the dead horse with how passionate we Red Sox fans are. I am proud to be passionate about a team. Good and bad times.
Oh and before it gets brought up....I hated the Nomar trade. I hated that we didn't re-sign Pedro (but I don't think we could have even if we offered $1 Billion) and I hate the fact that Millar will probably get traded this year. He is having an off year but he is an awesome guy. A bit of a loud mouth but an awesome teammate.
Re: RED SOX
JV- I am passionate about things. I'm a passionate 49ers fan. Always have been. I have never attacked a player on my team for having an off game, month, or season. Maybe Foulke does need a rest... why not say that, instead of writing him off completely? Apparently, you love the team, but don't feel the need to support all the players on the team. If that's the case, fine. But don't expect the players not to defend themselves. The fans may be the boss, but that doesn't give them the right to insult the employees. What would you do if you were doing the best you could, and your boss told you that you sucked on a daily basis? If your boss told you that if it were up to him you'd be fired? Like it or not, when people get defensive they'll attack whatever they can.
George- You give up on someone when they give up on themselves.
As far as people hating Red Sox Fans, get out of New England. Go into a sporting goods store, or a sports bar and tell them you're from Boston. I've just moved to Illinois, and I get the same question from every White Sox and Cubs fan... "You're not a Boston Fan, are you?" [/i]
Re: RED SOX
No wonder why you are bitter!
Just kidding.
Re: RED SOX
Hey Mike,
Maybe it's just Illinois (and or cubs/white sox fans), because I can't say that people are like that here in Maryland, at least not who I've met. I (and others) have been to Orioles games and gotten compliments from the Orioles fans and season ticket holders about how nice red sox fans are. (Not necessarily nice to their players, but nice to the other fans. LOL) I've never been made to feel like being a red sox fan is a bad thing in this area--now if I was a Yankees or Philly fan it might be a different story. My friends here think it's great (aka funny) that I get so worked up about New England sports and have even commented that my passion about it makes them passionate about it.
You can b*tch about a team without having your loyalty questioned. Especially if you're a Boston fan, we're the perpetual losers (and have the track record prior to Oct 04 to prove it), what good is it if the sky isn't falling, if someone isn't having an "off" game, if you can't hate Bill Buckner with every fiber of your being? It's part of the experience! :-({|= Embrace it, don't run away from it.
Two more thoughts on this soapbox...
1) Cubs fans shouldn't hate sox fans, they have NOMAH for chrissakes!
2) You want to hear a story about brutal fans? My husband and I went to a Rangers (I miss hockey...WAH!! ) game in MSG the night they retired Mike Richter's number, and the New York fans actually started chanting "WE SUCK" when they were losing. No matter how bad it's gotten at a Boston sporting event that I have gone to, I have never heard the Boston fans chant that. Maybe others have, but I haven't.
At any rate. Share the love. There's a lot of love in this forum.
Re: RED SOX
Get out of New England? I haven't lived in New England since the year I graduated (1995). I am not far from the Illinois border here in Michigan and there are lots of Cubs fans here (more than Tiger's fans). There is no hate here for Red Sox fans. And like Kate my friends love to have me over to watch the Patriots win the Super Bowl and when the Red Sox break the curse. At the same time they call to razz me when the B's get knocked out of the 1st Round by the 8th seeded Habs. It's fun. They love my passion. I see more Red Sox hats here in West Michigan than I see any other hat except for the Cubs.
I think you hate Red Sox fans because you are "the one in your family" who wanted to be different and root for the Yankees. Admit everyone. We all have that idiot who wanted to follow the path less traveled. I have a sister who grew up a Yankees fan cause the rest of us in the family hated them. You are "that family member".
I have friends in Chi town that don't necessarily like the Red Sox but root for them when they can. The only problem Chi fans have with Red Sox fans is that their run without a championship is longer and they are not getting the sympathy the Red Sox do. I listen to ESPN1000 Chicago all day long. I know what the majority of the Chi sports fan thinks there. I wondered once why the Red Sox did get that sympathy.....I figured it out very quickly. They have always had great teams and great players. Although both Chicago teams have had their fair share of good teams and great players they were not as consistent as the Red Sox teams were.
So why then did the Red Sox not win a championship with that many great teams? Because the Yankees were in their division and they too had great teams and great players. Put the Red Sox in a different division and/or in the NL. I guarantee the Sox have more trophies. Thank God for the Wild Card. Chicago will be thanking him or her for the wild card in the next few years as well.
"You give up on someone when they give up on themselves." What does that mean? Are you telling me that that's when I should or are you telling me that is what I do?
Re: RED SOX
You asked when you should give up on someone. That was my answer to your question.
I didn't know you weren't in New England anymore. Sorry 'bout that.
As far as me being "the one in the family that wanted to be different"... if forming my own opinions, and finding teams that I liked based on the way they played the game, then yeah, that's me. I was a Cardinals fan for many years, back when Busch Stadium was almost as big as Yellowstone National Park. When they won games with speed, pitching and defense... now that's baseball. I stopped following baseball for a while, and when I started again, lo and behold the Cardinals had become an AL-style team. The turf was gone. The walls were moved in to help McGwire. There was power all the way through the line up. I haven't really latched on to any team yet, though my co-workers are trying to turn me into a White Sox fan.
For the record, I don't hate all Red Sox fans. What I hate are people who say they are fans, but then belittle the players. I've seen it quite a bit with Red Sox fans, but you're not the only ones. I'm wondering what you and JV thought of Foulke in September and October of last year?
My brother-in-law is a Red Sox fan. I've never heard a negative comment about the team or any of the players come out of his mouth.
Katie- HI! Nope, not just Illinois. West Virginia, New York (for obvious reasons), Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, Arizona...
Re: RED SOX
To be honest with you I was never a big K.F. fan but I didn't dislike him either. He has been horrible all year and he needed a change. I didn't say that we needed to release him or anything. I was criticizing his comments.
I do not usually give up on players. Well I will always hate Wells.
I go to a lot of ball parks and I never get harassed. I have heard stories about Yankee fans getting it though. I seen one on video tape in N.O. at Mardi Gras and I have a close friend go to a Tigers game where he was sitting a section over from a guy who got a beer poured all over him and was yelled at to take the Yankees shirt off or it will happen again. I believe that was Tigers Stadium though...Cause I don't think there is a spot now where that could happen but. gain I have had nothing but Love from other fans.
Re: RED SOX
I hear you Mike. There are those fans out there that complain incessantly and are "fair weather"and give other fans a bad rap. I'm not sure that most red sox fans are like that though. (And I don't think George and JV are.) I see us being more of a "woe is us" group. LOL.
Me personally, I have never hated a red sox player or former red sox player except Clemens when he went to the Yankees. My husband always likes to point out that he went to the blue jays first, but it doesn't matter to me. He went to the sworn enemy. Even if our fans were the "reason" he didn't stay, he didn't have to go to the freakin Yankees.
There is one red sox player we jokingly b*tch about in our house and that's Bellhorn. It usually involves him coming up to the plate and me saying, "don't worry, he'll strike out."
I can't speak for some of the states you listed, and I'm sure there are tons of red sox fan haters out there, but half my family (Mom and two sisters) lives in Arizona and my sister Shannon's family is insane about Boston sports. They've even personalized their license plates for the sox and patriots. They've been nothing but welcomed by the community there. THey were even asked to join a "Patriots fans of AZ" group. My nephew plays baseball year round out there (and has travelled to CA for his games) and as far as I know has never been harassed about his love of the sox. Remember his name too, Russell Vaughan (my brother-in-law took our last name), someday he's going to be in MLB.
At any rate, Mike I admire your loyalty and support through thick and thin. I do agree that more fans should show that. But I think everyone here is pretty loyal.
GROUP HUG!!!!
Re: RED SOX
Well I don't know if Clemens had a choice because he was traded to the Yankees by the Blue Jays. He may have had a no trade clause but I do not know for sure. He did however choose to resign with them. Now Wade Boggs on the other hand....he signed as a free agent. THAT BASS TURD!
I too complain about Bellhorn but you have to realize that you can't have 10 All Stars on the field at one time. Someone has to be the #9 hitter. And he is a clutch hitter.
Re: RED SOX
He's a great fielder too. ANd I've seen him pull off some great hits, but he does lead the league in strike outs. Chances are, when he gets up, he's going to strike out. But you got to admire his courage getting up bat after bat despite the odds against him.
Re: RED SOX
My husband and I also joke about Bellhorn striking out. We just appreciate him for the good he does do the team...We never expect anything good from him offensively...However when he does get a hit or even a home run we appreciate him that much more!!!
