MHS Health Issues

I remember hearing a qhile back that there was a high rate of lymphoma or other types of cancers among former MHS students. Did anyone else hear this? Could anyone point me to articles?

Thanks,
Lori

Re: MHS Health Issues

Lori...I googled methuen high and lymphoma and came up with this...

http://www.mass.gov/Eeohhs2/docs/dph/environmental/investigations/methuen_students_hodgkins.pdf#search=%22methuen%20high%20and%20lymphoma%22

It's a pretty long scientific paper, but the gist was stated...

Quote:
"All of the information reviewed in this investigation therefore suggests that the pattern of Hodgkin’s disease seen among this group of former students or graduates of Methuen High School does not appear unusual in terms of risk factor characteristics that have been linked with Hodgkin’s disease risk among young adults."

In the conclusion it states...

Quote:
"Information reviewed in this report did not indicate that attending Methuen High School is likely to play a primary role in the pattern of Hodgkin’s disease occurrence among former students or graduates of the high school. Thus, MDPH/BEHA does not recommend further evaluation of Hodgkin’s disease among Methuen High School students or graduates at this time. MDPH/BEHA will continue to monitor Hodgkin’s disease incidence in Methuen through the Massachusetts Cancer Registry."

Re: MHS Health Issues

Thanks very much! I had actually googles and found an old article from the Tribune, but never anything about wether or not the study was finished and what the results were.

Re: MHS Health Issues

Anytime! You piqued my curiosity cause I had never heard anything about it...and it was within the time frame that we went to school there.

Re: MHS Health Issues

I know of at least three people who had the same type of cancer and graduated within 5 years of 1995 or in 1995. I won't post any names for their privacy.
But I believe a study was conducted back in the late 90's early 2000 and their was nothing that linked the cancer to the school. They study was done based off of a bunch of people that graduated long before us who also developed the same types of cancer.
However, I find it quite odd that it is a coincidence.

Re: MHS Health Issues

Unfortunately, I discovered in October that my intestinal lymphnodes are abnormal and we are "monitoring them" for now.

Just to add to the discussion.
