Methuen Mall

Hi everyone,

First post... was getting nostalgic and recalled spending most of my youth inside of the Methuen Mall. Didn't have a lot of luck turning up a few pictures of the insides. Anyone have some photos of this place? I'm thinking Dream Machine, York Steak House, etc etc. That mall had charm!

Re: Methuen Mall

Wasn't York steak house in where Apple Bees went? I remember that a little as a kid. I used to wash tables in the food court and bathrooms.....Not the best place to work. I don't have have any "charm" memories of that place.

Re: Methuen Mall

Yup, york steak house was over there.

The stuff I remember most from childhood from that mall were sitting on the low walls, the papa gino's, and being terrified of getting locked in every time I heard the mall closing announcement.

I have pics somewhere from Dream Machine from when I used to work there. If I ever get my stuff out of storage and find a scanner I'll scan them in. :)

Re: Methuen Mall

ahh the Methuen mall, I miss that old place. Hanging out in the Dream machine with Jay Tine and Darl Dispensa. Kicking both their @$$es at Mortal Kombat. Being able to get an orange julius (now i would have to go to the mall in Nashua for that). The Loop is ok don't get me wrong but if i was a teenager now looking for a place to hang out, it wouldn't be the same.

Heh, I remember those announcements too and hearing all the gates coming down. lol

Yeah if you ever do dig out those pics I would absolutely love to see them. I pretty much grew up in Dream Machine in the early to mid 80s.

I only worked at the Mall once and it was in a place called WaldenSoftware.

Hehe, I'm lucky to now live near that mall in Nashua. Whenever I'd like a little treat I hit the Orange Julius. Man is that place expensive. Yeah, no mall has been like the Methuen mall for me except for maybe the old malls in Danvers (pre makeovers). I guess it's really about where you spent time as a kid.

Re: Methuen Mall

I always thought orange julius tasted like baby asprin...

remember fit as a fiddle? I loved their salads, they were right next to Dream Machine.

I remember China Gifts, Mi Kasa-the hippie store, Tello's, and the store that sold the cavaricci's and bum equipment and skidz wear...does anyone remember the name of that store? I can remember exactly where it was and what it looked like, but I'm totally blanking on the name.

Hmm, there was DJs, Chess King, probably more. :)

I don't recall fit as a fiddle, although next to Dream Machine I do remember a place that sold stickers. My brother loved that place. Maybe that was before fit as a fiddle?

Some of the places I remember were:

York Steak House
Dream Machine
Lauriets
Waldenbooks/Waldensoftware
Record Town
Mr Tie??
That cool ice cream place in the food court
The weird organ place I never went in (name??)
The other record store (name??)
Casual Corner
Baskin Robbins
KB Toys

Re: Methuen Mall

Oh my goodness! Kate I can not think of the name of that store now!!!

I remember

Friendlys
Patavinas (Italian place that I used to go to with myfamily every sunday when I was really little)
Jordan Marsh
Filenes Basement
The Deb
Tellos
WaldenBooks
That candy store
China Gifts
579
Chess King
Baskin Robbins
Dream Machine
Units (that store was awful!!!!)

I remember the last time I was there and all that was left was Applebees and like one store and then they held a rave there and after that it was gone.....

I have to remember the name of that store!!

Re: Methuen Mall

Merry Go Round

OMG I loved their salads!! They were the best!!! I have never come across another place quite like them!

Re: Methuen Mall

Oh remember when there was nothing left in that mall and they sent us there for NERC in high school?
Stoooopid.
Stored changed so often, I really can't remember much besides Kay-Bee toys... and the pet store?
I also remember hiding behind one of the brick... structures in there (one of the random walls) to pop out at my mom when she walked by and say BOO! ... but instead she searched frantically for me thinking I had gotten kidnapped... So much for that plan. Yeah... warm and fuzzy...

Re: Methuen Mall

I worked at a baseball card kiosk in the mall when I was younger. Me, the girl who hated sports. LOL! I also remember the Dahers store and Spencer gift...Wasn't there a Wilson's leather too? (Of course, the stores mentioned above as well) Oh, those where the days!

Re: Methuen Mall

I used to work at the Applebees in the old Methuen Mall. Good times!!!I definately have many memories of hanging out at the mall before I worked there. Spending all my babysitting money at Help Ur Self the candy store. Does anyone remember that store???I used to love Deb and the weathervane and 579.
We used to have to make deliveries to people when they would order takeout. By then nothing was left but the music store and the expo place. I forget what they called it. Oh well!!!

Re: Methuen Mall

This may be aging myself a bit, but does anyone remember Howlands?

Re: Methuen Mall

I remember Methuen Mall, but not Howlands. Care to refresh my memory?

Re: Methuen Mall

Howlands was like a department store right? I think it was where filenes basement was before filenes basement was there....

Re: Methuen Mall

Ed Orsini used to work at the CVS in the Methuen Mall for a good long while. Meanwhile I worked at the Caldor next door.

There were some other MHS folks working there as well as some CC and PMA folks.

I remember Nino Chiola worked there and some other girl, I think her name was Michelle Bergeron or something Bergeron.

I remember having a crush on this girl. I started talking to her at work, and then on the phone. I didn't realize Nino had history with her. Well one day I go into work and she tells me that Nino told her what I was saying about her.

I said "Whoa, what? I'd like to know what he told you because I have never spoken to him about you whatsoever." She wouldn't say and she never spoke to me again. I was so bummed. No more talking to her on the phone and no chance at hanging out. I never even got to know what he said to her (assuming it was true).

I never confronted Nino about it either which was really my bad, but I was close to his brother David for a while and I didn't think it was worth getting pulled into a muddy situation.

One thing I don't miss about MHS is the drama.
:)

Re: Methuen Mall

I worked at Ann & Hope, the Sears anchor store replacement, up until the mall closed. I grew up at that mall and used to walk down there with my friends to hang out in the arcade. I used to rock the Mortal Kombat 2 machine and that crazy 6 player X-men game in the arcade.

I remember Walden books and across from it the Walden Computer store, wher I used to buy the latest games from Sierra.

I also remember that Mike & Ike candy machine that would give infinite candy if you justed turned the dial back and forth.

I also remember going into sears and standing at the console games to play the latest hits like Super Mario World.

I miss the mall.

Oh no.
Now I'm going to have to find a way to play that.

Re: Methuen Mall

i remember record town and sam goody record stores. lauriats was a great bookstore at the mall. man, i feel old

Re: Methuen Mall

I have a few little memories to add about the Mall.....

Where Howlands used to open up into the mall, there used to be this really big water fountain thing that you would throw pennies into and whatnot; maybe being a kid it seemed larger than it actually was, but you could actually walk in between the different sections of the fountain to get to the area that was the food court. I think by the time I was 7 or 8 yrs old that fountain was gone, so only those of us who are really ancient will remember that! In a store directly across from the fountains they sold all kinds of colored candy popcorn shaped into wierd characters and such, I think the store was just called Candy Corn or something like that.

Moving further down the mall towards Filene's Basement and Doctor pet store and Lauriat's, they had a little playground area that was simply a big yellow cement A-framed structure that had holes to climb up on one side and then slide down the other side, plus those little orange cement cylinder things with holes you could climb through; anyone that attended Chapel Nursery School in Methuen will remember what I'm talking about as they had the same wierd playground equipment.

Next to the Athletic Attic was the Jordan Marsh Bakery; they sold these enormous cupcakes with about a pint of frosting on top, yum. And I will always be fond of the mini-jukeboxes at the booths in the Papa Gino's with outdated music, but still fun to play with.

Does anyone remember the "mini-mall" within the Mall? It was next to Doctor Pet Store, I think, or really close to it. It was like a little collection of kiosks set up inside a storefront. From what I can remember, at the first booth you could get iron-ons for your T-Shirts, and there was another that sold pipe tobacco which gave off a nice smell when you walked by the place. There was also a kiosk that sold music memorabilia; I recall buying some Duran Duran concert photos there. Sad. Which brings me to another memory... the Benetton store. I got to pick out one shirt there for my 10th birthday and if I remember correctly it cost about 25 dollars, which was a big freakin deal that year!

That's about all I can recall at the moment.

Re: Methuen Mall

Wow, talk about walking down memory lane. I remember how much fun it was playing all the different car games at the Dream Machine. Wondering up until the age of 15 if those oranges at Orange Julies where real. The pebble wall out side the Basement. How about spending our money at Chess King for the latested I.O.U., B.U.M equip, or Z Cavarrechi. Yikes thats crazy :D

Wow, I can't believe you remember all that. Or that I had forgotten it. I remember most of it now. That water fountain was the coolest. I remember it being really big too!

Re: Methuen Mall

Yeah, George, I'm surprised I remember it also. I think that's what happens after 30; I can recall all these random snippets about the mall, but have no idea what I had for breakfast this morning!!

I can't claim to have a photographic memory, but I can remember the smallest details about everything throughout most of my life after 5ish up until now.

I don't know what it is, but even people's phone numbers from high school are still stuck in my head.

Freaks me out sometimes, but oh well.

I think you may be on to something Stacey. But I really think it has more to do with kids. You wait Miguel, wait till you have more. I think that's it. I too remember friends phone numbers and street addresses. I have a hard time with names of people I just met.

Re: Methuen Mall

Yes George, I suppose kids have something to do with it. My brain is so overcrowded with who needs to be picked up at what time and who needs to see the doctor on any given day, it's a wonder I can remember my own name!! Does it get any easier??? Maybe someday when the kids are taking care of me and scheduling MY doctor's appointments!?

DOES NOT COMPUTE

Re: Methuen Mall

What does not compute?

Re: Methuen Mall

I think he means that we are too young to remember that. I thought it was there since the days of Adam and Eve.

Re: Methuen Mall

I remember the mall , I graduated way back in 84.......It was really cool having someplace to hang out.

Re: Methuen Mall

Hi Everyone, My name is Lisa and I went to Lawrence High "89"(sorry), but I came upon your Methuen Mall conversation and I couldn't resist replying. I spent my teenage years there and it is also where I met my husband. We live pretty close to the Loop and I saw the old mall get torn down. It was so sad. Anyway, I think the store you were all trying to remember that sold the Z. Cavericci's and skids was called His Place. My husband and I both worked there and I also worked at Scribbles, Joanne's Nut House (which was a kiosk near Filene's Basement), and later at Zales. Here are the other stores I remember.

Friendly's
Stride Right
Baybank
Hickory Farms
Sackets Hallmark
American Eagle
Foxmoor
Lerner
Brooks (misses clothing)
Bayberry emporium
Orlands
Cherry & Webb
Yogen Fruz
Sunglass Hut
D.J's
Mrs. Field's Cookies
Bakers Shoes
Scott Jewelers
The Emerald Jade (jewelry store near Cherry and Webb)
Field's hoseiry
Deering's Ice Cream and Restaurant
Baskin Robbins
Sew Fro
Thom Mc Cann
Kenner's Shoes
GNC ( back when it sold real health food)

I also remember the big fountain-it seemed huge- and the tables and chairs that were around it for mid-mall snacking. Does anyone else remember the trees that were also around the fountain? I can't believe that no one ever died on those concrete jungle gym things! Anyway, thanks for bringing back alot of memories.

:D

Re: Methuen Mall

Sorry, I made a mistake. I called a store Orlands, But it was actually Ormond's . I think I blended Ormond's and Howland's. I also forgot Midway Records where they sold guitars in the back and Record Town near Lerner's.

Wow, you have a *great* memory. I had totally forgotton a lot of those. It's amazing how you can totally forget something but upon suggestion it comes right back.

The few other places I remember that haven't been mentioned are the popcorn ball place, the sticker place (right next to Dream Machine) I think they sold ice cream too, the piano place near Sears. And I can't say I've seen "The Gap" mentioned yet.

I do also remember the fountain and going from store to store on Halloween.

I'm still hoping that someone has some circa 80s pics of inside the mall. That would be the most amazing thing to see again! :)

Re: Methuen Mall

Ah yes the Methuen Mall who could forget such solid construction.. lets take a deeper time warp.. I remember that place further back going all the way to the nice white painted steel gurders.. I tried manytimes attempting to get the Geomatry setup right but not good when you don't have the textures of back then.. and slow computers making it tough to stamp out the BSP holes in trying to recreate a marvel for all to enjoy.. it was a mistake that it was ever killed off.. Thanks to the MARP I remember when all that was built taking away a huge parking lot at the end of the Horse Race era... so much has changed.. they should have kept the methuen mall.. external malls just don't make it in winter.. who ever designed the Loop made a bad mistake.. there was many ways around the issue.. but if you got 5 Million to waste on needless demolation of a great structure so be it.. everyone though nothing would happen to that place.. Salem is expanding more and more.. the Loop may be itself in the same fate as stores move to stamp out the sales tax..

Many Memories...
